New Year, Brighter You
It is easy to set goals for careers, life milestones, fitness goals, etc. However, identifying ways to infuse moments of joy and happiness into your everyday life can be a bit more challenging. Here are some different strategies to dream up joy and brighten up your year.
Declutter and Clean
This tip may be the most obvious (and sometimes the most difficult) but it can truly make a world of difference. If you haven’t used something in the last 6 months, toss it. Take 10-15 minutes a day to tidy up your living space, and dedicate a few hours a week for intentional cleaning. Your environment is a reflection of your life. Organizing a bright, clean space may make your life brighter and less stressful.
Practice Gratitude
When you take time to remember and reflect on all the things you’re grateful for, taking those things for granted becomes less likely. Celebrate the life you have now to make room for even more celebrations in the future.
Dance, Dance, Dance
Exercise and movement have been shown time and time again to be crucial for mental and physical health. But dancing for the sake of it is a little different than going to the gym. Dance like nobody’s watching! Put on your favorite music and dance around your living room. It’s a fun way to lift your spirits and inject some instant joy.
Join a Group or Club
Find a local or online group for something offbeat, unique, and totally you—like historical reenactment or competitive duck herding. Connecting with people who share niche interests can be surprisingly fulfilling and help expand your community beyond your immediate circle.
Volunteer
Volunteering doesn’t end in school days! Identify a cause or issue you care deeply about, whether it’s pet shelters, community garden projects, libraries or something else entirely. Finding purpose outside of your work and hobbies and aligning with your passions is a great way to feel connected to the world and yourself.
Create an Inspiration or Vision Wall
Fill a wall or board with quotes, photos, and items that inspire you. It’s a visual reminder of what motivates and uplifts you. Cross things off as feelings change or dreams become realized. Tracking your own desires and inspirations can nudge you even closer to your preferred path.
Make time for Close Moments
Savor the small things and simple pleasures. We all need love! Spending time with friends and family isn’t enough sometimes. Try to schedule cuddles, closeness and hangouts with the people you care about most deeply. Chatting with your friends over a snug morning mug can be the exact pick-me-up you might need. Often the people who bring us the most happiness are just a phone call away!
